A Couple of Dips in the Pool

From New Year's Pl...

The polar bears up in the North Pole may be disappearing, but the polar bears in Chico, CA are alive and well. Today marked the annual Polar Bear Plunge over at Bidwell Park. As like every year, Chicoans strip off their wooly parkas and jump into Chico Creek to test their ability to make it across the water without developing hypothermia. The plunge is supposed to start at 1 pm on the dot, but one guy jumped the gun early this year, and a massive wave of pasty white people started panicking and throwing themselves in like lemmings falling off a cliff. I jumped in as well, expecting the worst. However, the water only came up to my knees, so like Jesus, I just walked across the water, then walked back. Dang. What was the big deal about doing this? I didn't even experience any shrinkage. Feeling gypped, I jumped back in the creek and submersed myself completely in the water for a few minutes. When I finally lost all sensation in my legs and toes, I beamed with pride. Complete numbness...now that's the true sign of a polar bear plunge. I finally pulled myself back out, dried off, then biked home. Yes sir. 2007 is off to a great start. Too bad I still don't have any feeling in my toes, though. Oh well.
